Many voters agreed, frankly: Traffic is the point of development of the West. Input through this way, attract investment, develop trade, culture, tourism and everything; and the output is also here. Transport infrastructure development is an imperative to develop the region and is a top priority.

Traffic is always a bottleneck preventing the development of the Mekong Delta

This issue has not been identified until now. Nearly 20 years ago, the late Prime Minister Vo Van Kiet once pointed out “3 bottlenecks for regional development” which are traffic, irrigation and human resources. The late Prime Minister Phan Van Khai issued “3 decisions” to do “3 breakthrough stages” for development, including Decision 344/2005 / QD-TTg dated December 26, 2005 approving the directions, tasks and the transportation development plan of the Mekong River Delta region to 2010 and orientations to 2020.

In the next tenure of the Government of former Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung, Nguyen Xuan Phuc, traffic has always been identified as a “breakthrough”.

In particular, the people highly appreciated the aggressive role, drastic actions and specific instructions of the former Prime Minister, now President Nguyen Xuan Phuc. Thanks to that, the key projects and traffic artery have been operated. Trung Luong – My Thuan expressway has been completed and put into use after the past 12 years many times of commencement and suspension. Vam Cong bridge, Cao Lanh bridge, high-speed route Lo Te – Rach Soi have been completed and put into use. My Thuan – Can Tho Expressway, My Thuan 2 Bridge, Rach Mieu 2 Bridge are started and many other traffic works are expected to create a bright spot in the picture.

But so far, Western traffic is still the “low-lying area” of the country, especially not keeping pace with the rhythm of socio-economic development and regional development requirements.

Only the backbone traffic axis, the National Highway 1 connecting Ho Chi Minh City and Can Tho, often has bottlenecks, causing frustration and hindering localities to attract investment and development. Transport development in the Mekong River Delta region is a “bottleneck” of many terms of the Government, a “debt” to the people as the former Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc said.

Traffic The Mekong Delta is still in a state of “highway hunger, traffic thirst”. While the country has more than 2,000 km of expressways, the region only has more than 40 km of existing Saigon – Trung Luong Expressway and the Trung Luong – My Thuan section has just been completed. The entire transportation system of the Mekong Delta only accounts for about 10% of the country with more than 2,000 km of national highways, about 4,800 km of provincial roads, about 73,000 km of district roads and rural roads. Therefore, with the vision of Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh, the promise of the National Assembly candidate to present his campaign, both inheritance and development is at the most important stage. The most decisive is not “identification” but realization in the future. What to do to overcome the bottleneck? What funding sources, programs and projects need to be prioritized and how to implement them? Always the big questions that need convincing answers.

In the next 5 years, the Mekong River Delta will have an additional 2 billion USD from loans to complete the transport network such as national highways, coastal routes and highways. The Mekong River Delta should give priority to developing backbone traffic axes along the North-South, coastal routes, horizontal axes connecting regions and inter-regions, creating economic corridors to expand development space. , creating a new land fund for the construction of surrounding urban areas, commercial centers, industrial parks and residential areas, creating a new driving force for development. Need to connect and promote efficiency new key projects such as expressway My Thuan – Can Tho, Can Tho – Ca Mau, expressway Chau Doc – Can Tho – Soc Trang, expressway Ha Tien – Rach Gia – Bac Lieu, east coast route.

With the development needs of “low-lying transport delta”, the capital loan of 2 billion USD is a small number, only can “quench the thirst”. In order to promote and create resources, the West really needs the Central to pay attention to and support investment in this region because of the whole country. Lessons on key transport projects that have been delayed for more than 10 years such as Trung Luong – My Thuan expressway, Ben Luc – Long Thanh … are still valuable.

It is important to properly identify the urgent need and identify the congestion point, but determination and the possible solution to remove the congestion is the imperative of development. Must find a solution to the difficult traffic problem by mobilizing investment capital, determining order of priority, ensuring construction progress, construction quality and connecting transport modes.
